DEA's Purple Heart Award is a recognition granted to individuals who have been seriously wounded or killed while performing drug-law enforcement duties.
Joined by PNP Director-General Vicente Romero, DEA Acting Administrator Chuck Rosenberg presented DEA Sensitive Investigative Unit's (SIU) award to Quispe's father, sister and brother during a solemn ceremony in the U.S. capital.
Killed on duty
The hero met a tragic death on August 17, 2016, when he was killed while performing intelligence support duties in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro (VRAEM) rivers, an area overrun by drug traffickers and terrorism.
A National Police agent for 11 years, Edgar Quispe was also recognized as an outstanding SIU member.
The late officer was also included in DEA-SIU's Hall of Honor at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
Quispe thus became one of the 23 police officers to have received the award.
