Evangelina Chamorro, the woman whose struggle to survive has come to symbolize Peru's fight against the onslaughts of nature, on Wednesday was discharged from the local hospital where she recovered.

As is known, the 32-year-old was swept by a raging landslide in Lima Metropolitan Area's Punta Hermosa district.

While narrating her survivor story in a press conference, the young woman recalled praying to God for strength as she gasped for air in the torrents of mud.

Tragedy hit Evangelina on March 15, as she and her husband tended their farm after having taken their children to school. They suddenly found themselves surrounded by mud, which dragged them into the landslide.

She remembers her husband held onto her when the tree branch they were initially latched onto broke off. But he too was overpowered by the muddy torrent, which eventually swept the couple away from each other.

"I was desperate […].  We cried for help for half an hour, but nobody heard us," she recalled in a faltering voice.

"All the while I swallowed mud, and my whole body ended up caked in it," she continued.

"I thought of my daughters, wondering what would become of them without their mother or father. And I prayed God for strength to get out."

And He did listen to her. Three kilometers later, the current took her to Punta Hermosa Bridge, where she managed to wade her way out of the muddy mass.

The moment was immortalized by an astonished onlooker, whose footage has been broadcasted by leading media outlets around the world.

Evangelina only remembers taking a couple of steps once she emerged from the debris, after which she lost consciousness until she woke up in the hospital.

"I want her to recover a hundred percent so we can build a new life," adds Armando Rivera, her husband.

"I want to thank God because he basically gave us a new life," he concluded.
