Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Pareja urged Peruvian youth not to be misled by organizations sending citizens to Russia with promises of security and kitchen jobs, but who later end up performing military roles in the war with Ukraine.
"I call on youth not to be misled by these organizations that seek to recruit young people to travel to Russia under the pretext of performing security, kitchen, or other duties, only to later make them sign contracts to fight in the war with Ukraine," the diplomat stated.
Speaking to the press after attending a session of Congress' Defense Commission on Monday, he said such offers are often tempting due to the pay, but in reality compatriots put their safety and their families' well-being at risk.
"Families are suffering because these young people are in the war and are then not allowed to leave, so it is better that they do not go to Russia," the minister emphasized.
The Cabinet member said that, in response to the situation, authorities are coordinating with the Russian consulate and Peru's Embassy to assist compatriots seeking to return to national territory.
In that regard, the government official noted that several compatriots in this situation have already begun returning.
He underscored that Peruvians who contact the consulate are being repatriated.
