Peru: Mining investment up 26.2% in 1H 2019

Mining investment in Peru totaled US$2.532 billion between January and June this year, up 26.2% from the same period in 2018 (US$2 billion), the National Society of Mining, Oil, and Energy (SNMPE) reported on Tuesday.

The regions of Moquegua, Ica, and Junin accounted for 50.1% of mining investment in the first half of 2019.

Moquegua

Mining investment in Moquegua amounted to US$514.9 million, a 140.3% increase compared to the same period the year before, when it totaled US$214.2 million.

Ica

Ica was the second largest recipient of mining investment in Peru, having received US$499.6 million in Jan-Jun, which represents a 33.4% increase over the same period last year (US$374.3 million).

Junin

The region of Junin was the third largest recipient, with US$256.2 million, up 69.8% with respect to the first half a year earlier (US$150.9 million).

Fall reported in Arequipa

As for Arequipa, mining investment totaled US$181.9 million at the end of the first six-month period of 2019, which meant a fall of 22.3% against the US$234 million reported in Jan-Jun last year.
