Peruvian Education Minister Flor Pablo on Tuesday said that the results of
PISA 2018 test show the Inca country is on the right path to educational reform.
"We are not yet where we should be, but the results reflect what we have been doing over the years in terms of curricular reform, teacher meritocracy, and quality of university education," the cabinet member stated.
According to
PISA 2018 results,
Peru has experienced significant improvements in mathematics (from 387 to 400 points) and science (from 397 to 404 points) compared to
PISA 2015, while reading scores remain almost unchanged (from 398 to 401 points).
Pablo called on the educational community to reaffirm its commitment to keep working towards a more humanistic and less cramming education.
"The great change in the curricular reform has to do with putting emphasis on reading comprehension, not on repetition," she expressed.
For his part, Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra underscored that PISA 2018 results show Peru is improving in the three major subject areas: reading (+3 points), science (+7 points), and mathematics (+13 points).
"Out of the 80 countries taking PISA tests, only 7 have improved in said areas over the past 10 years, and Peru figures among the countries that have improved the most. We still do not reach the desired level, but the trend and growth curve are appropriate," he commented.
