Peru: Metal-mechanic sector up 6.1% in Jan-Apr 2018

16:03 | Lima, Jul. 3.

Peru's metal-mechanic sector grew 6.1% between January and April 2018 over the same period last year, Production Minister Raul Perez-Reyes informed Tuesday.

According to the official, said expansion was linked to the increased demand resulting from the construction sector's recovery.

Thanks to that, the production of electric motors, transformers, electric cables, engines, mining and quarrying equipment, as well as other metal products, was boosted in the first months of the year.

Furthermore, the cabinet member highlighted this industry has been showing signs of rebound. Thus, he expects the sector to register positive figures by year-end.

"The metal-mechanic industry is one of the sectors that generates and stimulates employment in the national industry. Over the last year, nearly 355,000 jobs were created in this sector," he noted.

Foreign sales

The Production portfolio head remarked metal-mechanic exports amounted to US$219 million in the first four months of 2018, a 25.1% rise over the similar period last year.

Top export destinations for these Peruvian products were Belgium, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and the United States.
