Señor de los Milagros (Lord of Miracles) second procession of 2017 brings the Purple Christ to the streets of downtown Lima since the early morning of Wednesday.
Dressed in purple robes, thousands of worshipers flocked to Las Nazarenas Church —the saint's home— to pay homage to Peru's most revered religious icon.
After leaving the monastery,
Lord of Miracles goes through diverse avenues escorted by the local
Brotherhood, and singers who pay tribute to the saint widely known in the Andean nation and overseas.
The icon is venerated by a multitude of people bound together by the common hope that the Lord will protect and give them strength in their daily lives.
Known as the Christ of Pachacamilla,
Lord of Miracles constitutes Peru's most heavily attended religious festivity and is celebrated by all strata of society in homage to the Crucified Christ.
This image is a replica of a centuries-old mural of the crucifixion painted by a slave in the 17th century. It can be traced to the colonial era in which an Angolan slave drew the image of a black Jesus Christ on the walls of a hut in the plantation of Pachacamilla, near Lima.
