The traditional
Señor de los Milagros (Lord of Miracles) procession of this year has been cancelled in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Archbishop of Lima Monsignor Carlos Castillo announced on Wednesday.
However, a series of virtual events have been organized so that faith-driven devotees can venerate the so-called 'dark-skinned' Christ.
"This year's would have been the 333rd Lord of Miracles procession, but we will not be able to carry the base (bearing the image) this time (…) Therefore, overcoming our difficulties and sins, we are going to celebrate the virtual activities that have been prepared," he noted.
For his part, Lord of Miracles Brotherhood Senior Administrator Jose Soto stated that the virtual masses and activities will include pictures captured in previous years, which will be broadcast on the brotherhood's media platforms and on HN Channel.
"We are going to organize a series of conferences with all our brothers and sisters from September to October," Soto underlined.
The virtual processions will be shown on October 3, 18, 19, and 28, as well as on November 1.
Additionally, he called on the faithful to follow the procession from home and to avoid going to the Nazarenas Sanctuary, in order to prevent crowds and the spread of infections.
On October 3, Monsignor Carlos Castillo will celebrate a mass from the Nazarenas Sanctuary, where he will pay tribute to the image of the Purple Christ.
