The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday called on citizens to overcome the current challenges in order to reach the Independence Bicentennial in July 2021 as a nation that reinforces its identity and lays the foundations for a democratic and inclusive development with equity for all.
"The arrival of the expedition in this bay was a significant step on the long road to freedom and justice," he noted.
The top official said that by commemorating that historic moment, one cannot help to feel pride because those events were shaping the country's future.
In this sense, the statesman mentioned that when Don Jose de San Martin arrived from Valparaiso (Chile), Peru was already preparing to join the expedition and make the ideals of freedom and independence a reality.
"The success in the struggle for the Independence of Peru and the Americas was marked by courage, pride and collective effort, but, above all, by the ability of thousands of men and women to identify a single common enemy," he stressed.
Mr. Vizcarra also mentioned that —200 years ago— Peru was already a place full of contrasts and diverse realities, with soldiers from Spain and the Americas, Peruvian nobles and families divided by factions.
And although the reality in the face of independence was complex and difficult, "we chose to be a free and sovereign country," he underlined.

On September 8, 1820, as part of the Liberating Expedition of Peru, Don Jose de San Martin landed in Paracas, near the Port of Pisco.
Peru became independent from the Spanish rule on July 28, 1821.
The independence process successfully came to an end with the Ayacucho Battle in December 1824.
