According to a preliminary report issued by the
Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER), 14 people have died as a consequence of non-stop heavy rains and landslides that have hit Camana Province in Arequipa region.
The head of COER-Arequipa, Guadalupe Suclla, stated that the
National Police of Peru (PNP) has reported the death of 14 people because of the landslides.
The first report came early this morning, outlining the death of three people in the area known as Miski, which is situated in the district of Mariano Nicolas Valcarcel in Camana Province.
As the time passed, the death toll worsened and increased to 14.
The COER head remarked that the operations center continues to monitor the damage caused by rains in the provinces of Caylloma, Castilla, Condesuyos, La Union, Camana, Caraveli, and Arequipa.
Preliminary consolidated damage report
Moreover, Suclla presented a preliminary consolidated damage report of the region and announced the provision of humanitarian aid, as well as heavy machinery, to the affected areas.
Said preliminary report indicates that 20,700 people were affected, 630 people were injured, and 5,495 homes were damaged by heavy rains throughout the region.
Rainfall damaged 538 kilometers of roads, 34 bridges, 118 water intakes, and 10,400 meters of canals.
COER-Arequipa keeps monitoring provinces, receiving information from local authorities, and coordinating the corresponding aid.
It should be noted that COER has received a damage report from 46 districts across Arequipa, of which 16 presented their report to the National Information System for Response and Rehabilitation (SINPAD).
Meanwhile, on Monday morning, members of the Regional Council of Arequipa held an extraordinary session, in which they declared a state of emergency in Arequipa region —for 60 days— due to the damage caused by heavy rains.
