Peru: Landslide buries homes in Pataz

14:11 | Pataz (La Libertad region), Mar. 15.

A landslide has buried around 30 homes in Cinco Esquinas —an area attached to the locality of Retamas, located in the district of Parcoy, province of Pataz, in the mountains of La Libertad region. The number of casualties is still unknown.

Locals have captured the precise moment of the landslide, which occurred as a result of heavy rains that have hit the high Andean areas of La Libertad region.

"No God! Everything has been buried," a person who recorded a video said, standing several meters away from the disaster.

In a statement, the Regional Government of La Libertad reported that Governor Manuel Llempen has summoned the members of the Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER) into an emergency meeting to take urgent action to help the affected population.

The document also warns that the magnitude of the disaster in Retamas is unknown, noting that Governor Llempen has already informed Prime Minister Anibal Torres about it, so as to activate the necessary actions.

Llempen also reported that he has communicated this to President of the Republic Pedro Castillo and that Defense Minister Jose Luis Gavidia left Lima for Trujillo and then went to the emergency zone.
