The Judicial Branch on Friday issued an order to ban 4 senior executives of Repsol company from leaving Peru for 18 months, following the spill of thousands of oil barrels into the sea which occurred at La Pampilla refinery on January 15.

The Temporary Preparatory Investigation Court of Puente Piedra-Ventanilla Section, led by Judge Romualdo Aguedo, issued this order on Repsol Executive-Director Jaime Fernandez-Cuesta, as well as executives Renzo Tejada, Gisela Posadas, and Jose Reyes.

The measure comes in response to the request from the Public Ministry.

This way, it seeks to ensure the presence of the multinational company representatives in the country during a possible criminal proceeding over this ecological disaster.

Likewise, the judge ordered the Judicial Police to enforce the measure and register this resolution for the corresponding purposes.

During the initial hearing held on Thursday, the lawyers of those investigated announced that the executives will collaborate with the investigations into the crime of environmental pollution.

Meanwhile, the Prosecutor’s Office affirmed that the defendants had not complied with their functional activities, thus causing the contamination of maritime waters and serious damage to the environment, as well as to the productive activities of fishermen in the area.

Oil spill

Repsol on Friday reported that 10,396 barrels of oil were spilled into the sea.

The oil slick has spread along the coast of Ventanilla, reaching Ancon and Chancay, where a negative impact on marine flora and fauna is registered.
