Peru's Migration agency has issued a total of 16,266 biometric passports in the period comprised between February 25th and May 23rd 2016, the said entity reported.
According to National Superintendent Boris Potozen, the Migration agency is focused on continuing to move forward towards completing passport modernization process.
"Our institution is undertaking major efforts to meet the demand for biometric passports projected to emerge starting July," the official noted.
Citizens will be able to obtain these documents without making a prior appointment. Procedures will be directly carried out at any of the 20 authorized offices nationwide.
Interested citizens must pay a S/98.50 (about US$29) fee at Peruvian State-run Bank of the Nation.
It must be noted national passports are deemed as Latin America's most affordable documents.
Secure document
The Peruvian biometric passport relies on 88 security measures, a microchip containing the holder’s biometric data and holograms, among others.
Such characteristics turn it into one of the world's most secure passports.
Travel benefits
By holding either the conventional or biometric passports, national citizens are allowed to travel to Schengen Area countries for up-to-90-day stays.
