11:25 | Lima, Feb. 10.

Irish President Michael D. Higgins arrived at Lima's Government Palace and pays an official visit to Peruvian counterpart Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

Afterwards, both leaders are expected to sign a series of agreements as part of efforts to boost bilateral ties.

Both Presidents will also seek to establish a regular political-dialogue mechanism and promote bilateral trade within the framework of the Multi-Party Trade Agreement (MTA) between the EU and Peru.

Mr. Higgins' presence in the Andean country will strengthen political dialogue, as well as provide greater dynamism to the bilateral agenda in terms of economy, trade, culture and cooperation.

Later today, the distinguished guest will visit Congress, where he will meet Legislative Branch Chairwoman Luz Salgado.

As is known, the Irish Head of State on Thursday led a conference on fellow Irishman Roger Casement, a nationalist and human rights campaigner, who stood up for Amazon Putumayo's indigenous peoples in the early 20th century.

It is the first time an Irish Head of State visits the Andean country.
