Peru Interior Min to support detained policeman who killed criminal

15:50 | Lima, Jan. 17.

Peruvian Interior Minister Carlos Moran on Thursday assured that his portfolio will not stop until Noncommissioned Officer Elvis Miranda Rojas —who has been given seven-month preventive detention for taking down a criminal— is released.

In this sense, the high-ranking official expressed rejection towards the court's decision, adding that —although the cop took down the delinquent Juan Carlos Ramirez Chocan— it happened during a legitimate police intervention.

"I have great respect for the Judicial Branch and the Prosecutor's Office, but some judges and prosecutors are carrying out a perverse doctrine in which the criminal is the victim," Moran expressed.

Total support

"We will not leave him on his own. His institution will support him. Neither crime nor delinquency will stop us," he underlined.

"The police sacrifice their time and family to protect citizens, as well as mayors' good management. The message to the agents is that this administration is committed to them. Just as we do not hesitate to sanction the bad elements who hurt us, we also have the strength to defend (the good cops) in cases such as this one," the minister added.

It should be noted said offender had a criminal record due to theft in 2017.

According to the police, the court did not take into account that the officer fired warning shots to stop the delinquent, who was running away with the belongings and money of Danfer Cutin Santos in northern Piura region, as it has been documented in the report.
