In the imperial city of Cusco, the 17th Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas (CMDA) began, one of the hemisphere's leading forums for political dialogue and cooperation on security and defense.

This event brings together more than 30 delegations from countries across the continent.

The opening ceremony was held at the Convent of La Merced.

It was led by Defense Minister Amadeo Flores, who highlighted the importance of this forum as an opportunity to strengthen regional cooperation and promote joint responses to the new challenges facing States.

During his remarks, the government official stressed that this forum will help expand the scope of defense action, without altering its fundamental mission of preserving sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests.

"This forum will address issues such as strategic resilience, human security, disaster risk management, human talent development, institutional transformation, and the responsible use of emerging technologies in the field of defense," he stated.

The Cabinet member also warned that current threats are constantly evolving and require greater levels of anticipation, adaptation, and coordination among countries.

In that regard, the Executive Branch representative mentioned challenges such as transnational organized crime, terrorism, cyberattacks, and natural disasters.

"I am confident that your participation and contributions will allow us to reach meaningful agreements within the framework of the objectives set, in order to strengthen the path toward a safer hemisphere, with development, equity, and well-being for our citizens," the minister said.

The 17th CMDA brings together representatives from countries such as Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, the Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, the United States, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, the Dominican Republic, Saint Lucia, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay, among others.

As part of the official agenda, the participating delegations will hold bilateral meetings to strengthen cooperation ties.

In Peru's case, meetings will be held with representatives from Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, and Chile.

Commitment to regional cooperation

Prior to the opening ceremony, Minister Flores, together with the participating delegations, led the national flag-raising ceremony at Cusco's Main Square.

This ceremonial act marked the beginning of this important hemispheric gathering.

The ceremony symbolized the commitment of the participating countries to dialogue, cooperation, and the building of a common agenda to strengthen security and defense in the Americas.
