Peru: Illegal mining camps destroyed during operation

12:50 | Tambopata (Madre de Dios region), May. 8.

Three illegal and precarious mining camps —as well as machinery, fuel, and supplies— were recently destroyed during a multisectoral interdiction operation led by Madre de Dios region's Prosecutor's Office Specialized in Environment, the Public Ministry informed on Wednesday.

The operation took place on April 30 at four locations along Madre de Dios River in eastern Peru.

Prosecutors Karina Garay, Americo Bautista, Milagros Coaquira, Herbert Vilca, as well as representatives of the National Police, Army, and Navy participated in the operation.

The authorities found three rustic camps, 10 engines, 7 rafts, 7 suction pumps, 7 hoppers, 4 batteries, 1 electric generator, 160 gallons of diesel fuel, 3 strakes, and 5 grams of gold, as well as tools.

After carrying out the corresponding registration, all the materials found were destroyed.

Peru's National Coordinator for Environmental Prosecutors Flor de Maria Vega noted the efforts undertaken by the Prosecutors during the operation, as it is difficult to access the area. She also reaffirmed the Public Ministry's commitment to fighting environmental crimes in the Inca country.

As is known, Prosecutor Vega was recognized by the U.S. State Department at the 2019 International Women of Courage Awards last March.
