Peru: Humanitarian aid ship sails for northern region

14:28 | Lima, Feb. 26.

Multi-purpose ship BAP Pisco currently sails for Paita Port (Piura region) carrying over 700 tons of humanitarian aid and logistic support on board in order to attend possible emergencies caused by rains and landslides in Peru's northern areas.

The departure of the vessel was supervised by Defense Minister Jose Huerta on Monday night.

On the occasion, he was joined by Ministers Zulema Tomas (Health) and Fabiola Muñoz (Environment), Head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces Commander General Cesar Astudillo, Navy General Commander Fernando Cerdan, as well as civil and military authorities.

"This is one part of the assistance we are taking to the northern zones," the official expressed.

Likewise, he noted the efforts undertaken by BAP Pisco to aid the people who have been affected by the recent rains and landslides.

"This is another demonstration of this ship's capacity and that it functions exclusively to provide logistic assistance for natural disasters," he added.

The vessel also transports 500 temporary housing modules —supplied by the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci)— for the Inca country's citizens who might lose their homes.

Within this framework, the ship is expected to arrive on Wednesday 27, which will coincide with the arrival of Air Forces' Hercules plane that is carrying 19 tons of clothes, food, and medicine.
