The Ministry of Health (Minsa) —through the General Directorate for International Technical Cooperation— and the UK Embassy noted the importance of the primary care level in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Remarks were made at a virtual conference, which witnessed the participation of different experts in the field.

The meeting featured National Health Service (NHS) England Deputy Director for Contracting and Incentives, Ali Sparke, who spoke about the "Recovery of Primary Care Services."

Sparke emphasized that the coronavirus pandemic has caused the neglect of other diseases that affect the population and need to be treated at healthcare centers.

Additionally, he noted that healthcare workers have been affected by the hard work they are doing.

"During the pandemic, medical staff have been feeling tired due to the high number of patients affected by coronavirus. There is much to do to improve the primary care level, where we want to have quick access to information and support from experts to assist patients and avoid a long waiting list," Sparke stated.

Moreover, the conference included a presentation by Dr. Minal Bakhai, deputy director and clinical chief of the Digital Primary Care Division, who spoke about Digital Access Models for Primary Care.

According to Bakhai, the arrival of SARS-CoV-2 has forced people, companies, and institutions to adapt to health measures. So, digital tools have been key to continue assisting patients who cannot miss out on check-ups.
