Health Minister Oscar Ugarte on Monday announced that 496,000 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine will arrive on Thursday, June 17, to continue the immunization of the population in Peru.

Ugarte mentioned that another batch of 497,000 doses is expected to land on June 24, while another 497,000 will arrive on July 1.

"We are able to assure the arrival of additional doses of the Pfizer vaccine in the coming weeks. 496,000 will arrive on June 17, 497,000 on June 24, and 497,000 on July 1, to provide peace of mind to the population, which trusts the vaccination campaign," he posted on Twitter.

According to the government official, these batches are part of the 62 million doses that have been secured so far, apart from the doses that Peru may get until the end of July.

Additionally, he affirmed that the current administration is working to reach preliminary agreements for 2022, in order to ensure a greater number of COVID-19 vaccine doses.

On Sunday, the minister noted that the vaccination rate in Peru has increased significantly, to more than 160,000 shots a day so far.

"For example, 180,000 people across the country were vaccinated on June 8, 160,000 on June 9, and 180,000 on June 10. That is, the vaccination rate is fairly high in the country," he explained.

In this sense, Ugarte remarked that the health system's capacity for vaccination has not been fully exploited yet, because new healthcare professionals are just being hired at the national level.
