Adults aged above 80 in more than 10 provinces of Peru's southern Cusco region will receive the first vaccine dose against COVID-19 on May 5 and 6, the Regional Health Management Office (Geresa) in Cusco announced on Tuesday.

Thus, vaccination centers will be set up in the following towns: Anta, Calca, Pisac, Urubamba, Santa Ana, Maranura, Sicuani, Tinta, Checacupe, Marangani, Acomayo, Paruro, Accha, Yaurisque, Urcos, Quiquijana, Oropesa, Ccatcca, Ocongate, Paucartambo, Challabamba, Colquepata, and Huancarani.

On the other hand, the immunization process in the provinces of Chumbivilcas and Espinar will be announced in due course.

Regional Health Management Office (Geresa) Manager in Cusco Juan Alberto Spelucin ensured the presence of vaccination brigades in all capitals of provinces and districts to reach the goal in the foreseen deadlines.

"Our goal is to reach at least 80% of the population over the age of 80, whether they are insured or uninsured," he said.

The official explained that a properly-equipped freezer will be installed in La Convencion Province to ensure future vaccinations supported by all guarantees throughout its territory.

Likewise, Spelucin recognized the capacity of district mayors, professionals, and health brigades to join the objective of immunizing adults over 80 years of age across the region.

The first vaccination stage completed in Cusco province allowed the inoculation of more than 7,000 older adults, exceeding 80% of the goal (8,415).

Additionally, he indicated that —at the moment— no adverse reaction was reported by any vaccinated older adult.

People over 80 years of age, who contracted the virus or had contact with someone who had it, can be inoculated later.

"We ask the population to accompany the elderly to complete this process. If not, they must notify the brigades so that, later, they will arrive at their homes in an exceptional manner," he reiterated.
