Peruvian Government has resumed its efforts to build 150,000 social houses over the next five years, Housing, Construction and Sanitation Minister Edmer Trujillo announced on Thursday.
The initiative was launched as part of the Government's economic recovery package.
Speaking from Jauja, Trujillo informed the Council of Ministers session agreed to allocate S/200 million (US$61.5 million) to start works under State-run
Techo Propio (Own Roof) mechanism.
"A program to build 150,000 new houses was announced prior to the occurrence of
Coastal El Niño, and we had pledged S/450 million (US$138.3 million) for this year," he explained.
"Yesterday, the Council of Ministers decided to allocate S/200 million (US$61.5 million) to start," he continued.
The measure follows a S/130 million (US$39.9 million) early commitment to rebuild houses hit by Coastal El Niño weather phenomenon.
Following the latter, projections led to pencil new measures, in order to revive the sector and dig deeper into the housing issue.
Besides, he expects a 30% recovery in placement of mortgage loans, compared to last year.
In must be noted S/3 billion (US$922.5 million) have been awarded to local and regional governments to develop
water and sanitation works.
In this sense, Trujillo expressed optimism over his sector. He also predicted that —by the end of the year— 500,000 people will have access to drinking water services, while other 600,000 will get sewer services.
"We want to fulfill President Kuczynski's commitment to provide
high-quality water to all citizens across the country," he emphasized.
