The Government of Peru has approved a disbursement of S/6,266,160 (around US$1.76 million) to the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) in order to provide extra pay for prison staff carrying out high-risk practices as part of the emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) —through Supreme Decree No. 255-2020-EF published in El Peruano official gazette— authorized the transfer for this bonus payment, which was previously approved on May 5 by Urgency Decree No. 053-2020.

This benefit is aimed at National Police personnel; officers, technicians, and non-commissioned officers of the Armed Forces; as well as the staff of the National Program for Youth Centers and the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE).

According to the recently approved supreme decree, the resources from this transfer cannot be destined, under responsibility, for different purposes than those for which they are transferred.

The document bears the signatures of Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra, as well as Ministers Maria Antonieta Alva (Economy and Finance) and Ana Neyra (Justice and Human Rights).
