Peru Gov't announces program to generate one million jobs

14:37 | Lima, Jun. 15.

The Arranca Peru (Get off the Ground, Peru) Program will generate 1,009,700 jobs through an investment of S/6.436 billion (about US$1.858 billion), which would be noticed from the second half of 2020, the President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra reported on Monday.

"We are proposing a series of important investments that will be approved at the Council of Ministers session on Wednesday by means of an Urgency Decree so that investments happen in the shortest possible time and can be reflected in the second half of 2020," he said.

This program summarizes an additional effort in terms of public investment in four sectors: transport and communications, housing, agriculture, and labor.

In the transport and communications segment, an additional S/3.897 billion (around 1.125 billion) investment is expected for the maintenance of the neighborhood road network, which will generate more than 500,000 jobs.

Regarding housing, the plan is to authorize an additional budget of S/535 million (around US$154.4 million) to increase this year's goal by 20,000 houses, thus creating 80,000 jobs.

Also, in coordination with local governments, cities are expected to be improved through the enhancement and construction of dams, as well as interventions in public spaces, with an investment of S/937 million (about US$270.4 million), thus creating 57,000 jobs.

As for agriculture, the allocation of an additional budget of S/373 million (around US$107.6 million) is being considered for the improvement of water harvesting systems and the maintenance of drainages, which will generate 76,555 employment opportunities.

In the case of labor, the Trabaja Peru (Work, Peru) Program plans to make an additional effort of almost S/700 million (about US$202 million) to generate more than 226,000 jobs.

All this translates to more than one million new jobs in ministries, municipal governments, among others.

Initially set to last from March 16 to 30, the quarantine was extended until June 30.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Monday marks the ninety-second day of mandatory social isolation in Peru.
