10:00 | Lima, Dec. 31.

The Peruvian Government has made official the closure of beaches in force nationwide on December 31, 2021, and January 1, 2022, to avoid possible infections due to COVID-19.

In the same way, it made official the start of New Year's curfew tonight at 11 p.m. until 4 a.m. the next morning in the provinces under moderate alert, such Lima Metropolitan Area and Callao region.

Both measures are detailed in Supreme Decree No. 188-2021-PCM published Thursday night in the Official Gazette El Peruano.

The regulation also indicates that during the national state of emergency, as a result of COVID-19, the use of Peruvian coast beaches (as public spaces) is restricted so as to avoid crowds and be able to adopt measures for adequate control.

However, non-contact water sports such as: surfing, sailing, and rowing, among others, which take place exclusively in the sea area and feature physical distancing, are excepted from this restriction.

Likewise, the use of surrounding public spaces such as: boardwalks, sidewalks, and bicycle lanes, among others, will continue to be allowed for outdoor sports —always wearing face masks.

According to the regulation, local governments, in coordination with regional ones, are allowed to order the closure of beaches, rivers, lakes or lagoons in the event of crowds in areas under moderate, high or very high alert.
