Total gas, as well as oil canon and overcanon, reached S/24.909 billion (about US$7.393 billion) between 2008 and 2017, the National Society of Mining, Oil, and Energy (SNMPE) informed Thursday.

According to Hydrocarbon Sectoral Committee President Alberto Varillas, Cusco region received S/15.891 billion (US$4.716 billion) in gas canon, while Piura region collected S/4.505 billion (US$1.337 billion) in oil canon and overcanon.

"Obtaining resources through canon and overcanon translated into direct benefits for the people," the official told Andina news agency.

Likewise, he pointed out the budget execution level in both regions was positive.

Works

On the other hand, roads, schools, medical centers, among other infrastructure works were built thanks to canon and overcanon resources.

Furthermore, Varillas affirmed there is no other Peruvian economic activity that could generate such income apart from the mining sector

"The population must be aware of that," he said.

The SNMPE representative went on to add exploration is important in order to find new hydrocarbon deposits, which lead to generating new income.
