On the occasion of the 142nd anniversary of the Battle of Arica, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) highlighted the example of struggle and patriotism of Colonel Francisco Bolognesi and called on Peruvians to work together.

"Let us reaffirm the commitment to the country's development, working together with each of us performing our roles, showing our love for Peru," the government department said on Twitter.

The Battle of Arica took place on June 7, 1880, within the framework of the War of the Pacific that pitted Peru against Chile, and in which Chile took over the city of Arica.

It is worth noting that Alfonso Ugarte, chief of the Eighth Division, jumped off a cliff down into the ocean to prevent the capture of the Peruvian flag when he saw his army being cornered by Chilean forces.

June 7 celebrations commemorate the determination of soldiers who did not surrender and fought in defense of their ideals and the country at that time.

For its part, the Joint Command of the Armed Forces underscored that Peru commemorates the Day of Renewal of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and the legacy of Colonel Francisco Bolognesi, the Grand Marshal of Peru.

He emphasized that Bolognesi sacrificed his life upholding the highest values that the nation aspires to: honor, loyalty, and respect.

On the other hand, Justice-Human Rights Minister Felix Chero remarked that all Peruvians who heroically defended Arica are remembered today, which is a particularly important date for the unity of the country and the reaffirmation of the commitment to continue fighting for the country that we all deserve.
