The honorable Peruvian diplomat and former United Nations Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar passed away on Wednesday night in Lima, his son Francisco Perez de Cuellar has confirmed.
"After a few complicated weeks, my dad died tonight at 8:09 pm (local time), and he rests in peace," he told RPP radio and TV station.
The wake will be held at Lima-based Torre Tagle Palace (the Foreign Affairs Ministry headquarters) on March 6 starting at 10:30 am, and the burial will take place the following day at Presbitero Maestro Cemetery, also located in the capital city.
Francisco Perez de Cuellar said his late father will receive the honors corresponding to a Head of State at the funeral, as informed by the government authorities.
"I deeply lament the passing of Mr. Javier Perez de Cuellar, a distinguished Peruvian citizen, a full-hearted democrat, who dedicated his entire life to the efforts aimed at making our country great. On behalf of all Peruvians, I express my heartfelt condolences to his family," Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra wrote on Twitter after learning the news.
On that occasion, authorities from the South American country and abroad greeted him and praised his outstanding career.
Perez de Cuellar served as UN Secretary-General from January 1982 to December 1991.
During the transition Government of former Peruvian President Valentin Paniagua (November 22, 2000 — July 28, 2001), the ambassador served as Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
