Peru: Former Congressman Villanueva detained over influence peddling (Preview)

16:03 | Lima, Nov. 26.

Former Congressman Cesar Villanueva was on Tuesday placed under preliminary detention at the request of Prosecutor Jesus Fernandez Alarcon, within the framework of an investigation on influence peddling linked to the Odebrecht case.

The arrest took place in a restaurant located in Lima's Los Olivos district.

The preliminary detention —for a period of seven days— may have been ordered, as Villanueva held a clandestine meeting with prosecutors from the team investigating him, the local media has reported.

Cesar Villanueva, 73, is investigated for having allegedly favored Brazilian company Odebrecht with the San Jose de Sisa Highway Project, when he served as San Martin Region Governor (2007-2013).

This is a developing story.
