The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNLIREC) held the National Course on Combating Trafficking in Arms and Ammunition (CTAM) to help prevent and fight this scourge, with particular emphasis on border areas.

The activity was held in the northern city of Tumbes from May 26 to 29.

It was co-organized by the Ministry in its capacity as chair of the National Commission against the Illicit Manufacturing and Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, and Other Related Materials (CONATIAF).

The objective was to analyze the regional context of this issue, as well as to transfer specific knowledge and tools to strengthen the regulation and control of these materials, preventing their diversion into illegal channels.

More than 30 representatives were trained, including officials and operational personnel from key institutions involved in combating illicit arms trafficking.

These included the Peruvian National Police; the Superintendence for the Control of Security Services, Weapons, Ammunition, and Explosives for Civil Use (Sucamec); the Public Ministry (Prosecutor's Office); the Army; the Navy; the National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat); the Citizen Security Office of the Regional Government; and the Decentralized Directorate of Tumbes.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that this workshop, together with its previous edition held in Trujillo last March, reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the capacities of those institutions responsible for addressing the issue.

"Thus, the aim is to combat illicit arms trafficking networks, a scourge closely linked to crimes such as transnational organized crime, drug trafficking, terrorism, contract killings, smuggling, and illegal mining," it emphasized.
