Peru: Foreign Affairs Ministry and UN join efforts to strengthen El Niño preparedness

Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Espa held a working meeting with United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in Peru Rossana Dudziak and representatives of the 10 UN agencies that make up the UN Humanitarian Country Team, with the aim of strengthening international cooperation for preparedness and response to the 2026–2027 El Niño phenomenon.

During the meeting, the government official highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation with the UN System to reduce risks and bolster the country's response capacity, particularly in the most exposed areas and for the benefit of the populations most in need.

The Cabinet member acknowledged the support provided by UN agencies in coordination with national and local authorities, particularly in Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, and La Libertad regions.

In turn, National Commission for El Niño Risk Management Technical Secretary Juan Carlos Castro outlined the main actions being carried out by the Peruvian State in response to the risks associated with heavy rainfall and flooding in Peru's northern and central parts, as well as drought scenarios in the south.

He noted that work is underway to address the identified critical points and strengthen national capacities.

For their part, the Resident Coordinator and representatives of the UN Humanitarian Country Team reiterated the commitment of the United Nations system to complement the Peruvian Government's efforts.

Likewise, they stressed that preparedness and anticipatory action are essential to save lives and reduce the impact of a potential emergency.

The UN agencies also stated that they are mobilized and working in close coordination with the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM), the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci), and other relevant authorities.

Finally, the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the UN System reiterated their commitment to working together to strengthen national preparedness and response capacities.
