Peru: Five must-visit natural destinations for Independence Day holidays

15:48 | Lima, Jul. 23.

July is one of the most important months for Peruvians as it marks the anniversary of the Inca country's independence. Plus, it provides the perfect opportunity to embark on an adventure journey, and even more when it comes to protected natural areas.

The National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp) offers five breathtaking nature, culture, and adventure options to enjoy during the Independence Day long weekend on July 27-29.

The promotional campaign urges travelers to visit protected natural areas in a responsible and friendly manner.

Lachay National Reserve (Lima region)

The perfect green film covering the reserve during this season offers a wonderful landscape for visitors.

Lachay is a perfect destination —due to its easy access and proximity to the capital city, Lima— to indulge in different activities like going camping or having a barbecue.

Activities:

Birdwatching, trekking, and exploration of cave paintings.

Palomino Islands (Guano Islands, Islets and Capes National Reserve)

Enjoy a 4-hour journey exploring one of the largest seal colonies along the Peruvian coast in Callao region.

The area is home to about 8,000 seals, who rest, swim, and share the space along with guano birds and other marine mammals.

Activities:

Marine fauna observation and boat rides.

Pomac Forest Historical Sanctuary (Lambayeque region)

Enjoy a memorable horseback or bike ride around the nearly 6,000-hectare carob forest and get immersed in a magical experience as you explore Sican culture pyramids, one of the largest legacies in Peru's history.

Activities:

Birdwatching, trekking, cycling, horseback riding, and a visit to La Merced archaeological site.

Allpahuayo Mishana National Reserve (Loreto region)

Located 40 minutes from Iquitos city in Loreto region, the reserve covers one of the largest areas of white-sand forests in the Peruvian rainforest.

Activities:

Walks, fauna and flora watching, as well as visits to giant trees (of up to 30 m height).

Tingo Maria National Park (Huanuco region)

Hailed as Huanuco's main attraction, the park includes a spectacular mountain chain in the Peruvian rainforest called La Bella Durmiente (Sleeping Beauty).

One of the area's main attractions is the cave named Cueva de las Lechuzas (Cave of the Owls).
