The Peruvian Ministry of Production (Produce) indicated that the fishing sector might have grown 55.2% last June compared to the same month of the previous year due to increased landing of hydrobiological resources.

Thus, fish landings are expected to have reached 363,000 tons, representing a 133% expansion compared to June 2023 (155,000 tons).

Production Minister Sergio Gonzalez explained that these results are due to the increase in anchoveta fishing for the production of fishmeal and fish oil, expected to grow 482% in June compared to the same month last year.

This will dynamically boost fishery exports and, consequently, increase foreign currency (income) for the country.

He explained that the increase in landings of species intended for direct consumption, particularly those aimed at canning and freezing industry, such as horse mackerel, anchoveta, bonito, scallops, and hake, also contributed to this result.

Positive impact on GDP

Last June 2024, the total contribution of the fishing sector to Peru's GDP is expected to be around 0.28% (equivalent to S/135.6 million =US$36.37 million at constant prices).

Thanks to this result in the first half of 2024, the fishing sector might have recorded a 44.8% growth compared to the same period last year.
