The Peruvian farming sector registered an expansion of 11.1% last July over the same month in 2020, being the highest figure reached so far this year, the
reported on Wednesday.
According to results provided by
Midagri's General Directorate of Statistics, Monitoring and Evaluation of Policies, the previous highest growth in the farming sector registered this year was in June (8.8%).
Similarly, last July the agricultural subsector experienced a rebound of 16.5%, while the livestock subsector rose by 2.7%.
The agricultural subsector expansion was mainly due to higher production of paddy rice, which expanded by 56.9% (greater planted area and delayed harvests in Piura region) followed by that of yellow corn, which did so by 38% (greater harvested area in Ica, Lima, and Ancash regions), as well as to the increase in onion production (36.1%, with greater planting and harvesting in Arequipa, La Libertad, and Ica regions).
Higher levels of potato production also stood out (29.8%, with a greater area harvested in Apurímac, Pasco, and Ayacucho regions), as did wheat (21.4%, with higher production in La Libertad, Cusco, and Ayacucho regions); parchment coffee (17%, with higher production in Ucayali, San Martin, and Cajamarca regions); and asparagus (13.5%, with higher production in Lima and Ica regions).
For their part, the positive results of livestock production were essentially based on higher production of chicken (3.2% due to higher numbers in Lima, La Libertad, and Arequipa regions); raw cow's milk (27%, and a greater number of producing cows in Cajamarca, Puno, and Cusco regions); pork (5%, and a higher output in Lima); in addition to cattle (1.3%, and a higher output in Cajamarca and Cusco regions).
Accumulated results
According to the General Directorate of Statistics, Monitoring and Evaluation of Policies, the farming sector accumulated a growth of 1.4% in January-July 2021 compared to the same period last year.
This is due to higher production of both the agricultural (1.7%) and livestock (0.8%) subsectors.
