Peru FA Min: International community must end impunity in Venezuela

17:54 | New York (U.S.), Sep. 26.

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio on Wednesday deemed it necessary that the international community takes action to end impunity in Venezuela and to prevent crimes against humanity from occurring and remaining unpunished.

In statements to the press, Popolizio said the investigation —requested to the International Criminal Court's (ICC) Office of the Prosecutor— over alleged crimes against humanity during the Government of Nicolas Maduro must be conducted expeditiously.

When commenting on the submission of the request —along with foreign affairs ministers of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, and Canada— the Peruvian affirmed that other nations may also join the initiative.

"This initiative was discussed by countries in the region. The first six countries have decided to submit the letter that allows the Criminal Court's Office of the Prosecutor to initiate the investigation of the events," he pointed out.

Such letter makes an accurate request to investigate what is contained in the abovementioned reports, which make reference to tortures, extrajudicial executions, violations, and unjustified imprisonment.
