Prime Minister Alberto Otarola announced the Executive Branch's decision to declare health emergency in 20 regions, for a period of 90 days, in order to deal with dengue cases.

Otarola added that the Health Ministry (Minsa) ordered the transfer of doctors specializing in infectious diseases to various parts of the country, as well as the supply of medicines in advance.

"We are dealing with dengue in a responsible manner and with appropriate responses," he told reporters.

In this regard, Health Minister Cesar Vasquez explained that his portfolio proposed, for 2024, a regular plan against dengue.

It entails an amount close to S/108 million (about US$28.47 million), of which S/91 million (about US$23.99 million) is contained in Peruvian regions' initial opening budget.

"There were difficulties in the execution of these resources by regional health directorates. In response, we provide technical administrative support," Vasquez said.

"We are confident that the total allocated (amount) will be executed in the coming weeks," he added.

Cases

Within this framework, Minister Vasquez reported that the deaths of 32 Peruvians due to dengue in different regions of the country have already been confirmed.

He added that another eight (8) deaths from this disease are currently under investigation.

The Cabinet member mentioned that 17,965 dengue cases have been so far confirmed nationwide.

Remarks were made during a press conference held after a Council of Ministers session.

This event took place at the Government Palace Courtyard of Honor in the Peruvian capital, Lima, on Monday afternoon.
