Peru: Ex-advisor Jaime Villanueva participates in identity check hearing at Judiciary

10:27 | Lima, Nov. 28.

The Sixth Preparatory Investigation Court on Tuesday performed the identity check on Attorney General's ex-advisor Jaime Villanueva, who is under 10-day preliminary detention as part of the investigations involving Attorney General Patricia Benavides.

Judge Leodan Cristobal Ayala, head of the aforementioned court, asked the person under investigation for his personal data to compare it with the information contained in the court resolution that had ordered the preliminary detention.

Villanueva confirmed his personal information, identified himself as a graduate in Philosophy and said he had been serving as Public Ministry manager.

Likewise, the judge asked if at the time of his arrest he had been informed of the reasons for it and if he had been given the opportunity to receive support from a lawyer of his choice.

Villanueva said yes. Similarly, the detainee indicated that he had not been subjected to verbal or physical abuse.

Afterwards, Judge Cristobal Ayala confirmed Villanueva's identity, adding that his fundamental rights were scrupulously respected.

He also indicated that the preliminary detention of Jaime Villanueva Barreto ends on December 7. The proceedings that led to the restrictive measure must be carried out during that period of time.

The Deputy Prosecutor of the Special Team of Prosecutors against Corruption of Power, Marilu Cardenas, and Villanueva Barreto's defense lawyer, Cesar Euscategui, participated in the hearing as well.

In remarks to the press, Euscategui indicated that he will appeal the resolution that had ordered the preliminary arrest of his client, whom the Public Ministry claims as being part of a criminal organization that would have influenced the decisions of some parliamentarians for personal benefit.

Later, an audio recording of Villanueva was released. It contained an alleged coordination to obtain at Congress the necessary votes leading to the disqualification of then-Supreme Prosecutor Zoraida Avalos. She had served as Attorney General between January 2019 and March 2022.
