The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) announced on Thursday that the Peruvian Government is evaluating measures to anticipate the impact of the 10% tariffs to be imposed by the United States on Peruvian products starting April 5.

"Mincetur has been working in coordination with the sectors of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, Economy and Finance, Production, and Foreign Affairs to assess the various measures announced by the U.S. Government, with the aim of anticipating the estimated impacts and proposing strategies for different scenarios," it stated.

The Ministry mentioned that the U.S. Government has announced the imposition of generalized and differentiated reciprocal tariffs on more than 180 countries, as a key part of its economic policy to match tariffs and trade barriers that other nations impose on U.S. products.

"In this Executive Order, Peru has been included with a general 10% tariff on exports to the U.S. market. This is the lowest rate that the U.S. will apply globally, and this tariff policy is set to take effect starting Saturday, April 5," Mincetur stated on its social media platforms.

"It should be noted that this is not a measure specifically against Peru, but rather a response to this new U.S. policy, which is ultimately aimed at reshaping the country's trade relations worldwide and reducing its trade deficit," it added.

Given this scenario, the Ministry stated that it is reaching out to U.S. trade authorities to coordinate the necessary actions to safeguard the operations of Peruvian companies exporting to said market and mitigate the potential impacts of these measures.

"Mincetur will continue working, hand-in-hand with the public and private sectors, to provide the necessary certainty and tools to Peruvian exporters, enabling them to continue positioning Peru’s offerings in global markets," it concluded.
