The European Union (EU) is satisfied with the level of security found in biometric passports manufactured by Peru, and awaits completion of the bidding process to sign the agreement intended to exempt Peruvians from having to request a visa before traveling to Europe.
EU Ambassador in Lima Irene Horejs said EU technical experts convened December 7th in Brussels to discuss the topic, and shared a very positive impression on the security of the (forgery-proof) passport and the bidding process regulated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
“The biometric passport to be issued by Peru has proved to be quite safe and forgery-proof so far; it has built considerable confidence in the Peru process and turned out very positively,” she was quoted as saying by Andina news agency.
As for the signing due date, the Ambassador avoided setting one, but noted everything will be ready as soon as the issuance of these documents gets started and the bidding process is over.
The Peruvian government informed that 5,000 biometric passports will be issued in Lima starting February 2016.
Additional 15,000 passports will be handed over in April 2016, followed by other 40,000 units in May.
As at July 2016, 20 distribution points will be set up across the country with the aim of distributing 1,200,000 documents during three years.
