The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) elected Peru by acclamation as a member of the United Nations Statistical Commission for the 2026–2029 period, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported on Tuesday.

It highlighted that thanks to this appointment, Peru will occupy one of the three vacancies of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (GRULAC), along with Brazil and Cuba.

INEI's Chief Gaspar Moran Flores stated that this election represents an international recognition of Peru's commitment and track record in strengthening the National Statistical System (SEN) and in promoting official statistics that are high-quality, timely, transparent, and aligned with global standards.

"This appointment not only honors the INEI but also reaffirms Peru's technical leadership in the region and on the international stage, consolidating our active role in the development of official statistics. Technical independence, processes, information transparency, and quality in information management allow us to position ourselves at this level," Moran indicated.

Designation

The official emphasized that Peru's election as a member of the United Nations Statistical Commission represents a milestone of great strategic value, as it will allow the South American country to join one of the most influential and prestigious technical bodies of the United Nations System.

This international recognition not only places Peru at the forefront of global statistical development but also decisively strengthens its path toward accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), he added.

The UN Statistical Commission is the most important body of the global statistical system and the top coordinating entity in international statistical activities.

"Its responsibilities range from the establishment of statistical standards to the development of concepts and methods, as well as their implementation among member countries," he remarked.

Contribution

Peru's inclusion in the United Nations Statistical Commission reaffirms its commitment to strengthening statistical systems at both the domestic and international levels.

This participation will allow the country to foster the use of reliable and timely data as a foundation for decision-making, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals.

Moran also thanked all INEI professionals nationwide who produce censuses, household surveys, and economic surveys, national accounts, short-term economic indicators, poverty estimates, population projections, labor market statistics, crime victimization statistics, municipal statistics, among others; as well as the staff of National Statistical System institutions, for their dedication, excellence, and commitment to the country's development.

"This designation motivates us to continue working with greater responsibility, transparency, and innovation at the service of all Peruvians," the INEI head concluded.
