Peru was elected on June 4 as a member of the
Peru's election for this new term reaffirms its commitment to the multilateral system and its willingness to actively contribute to the promotion of an international development-oriented agenda.
This election, which received the support of 182 member states, stands as a recognition of Peru's commitment to the multilateral system and, particularly to key issues on the social and economic agenda, such as poverty eradication, reduction of inequalities, social inclusion, and environmental protection.
ECOSOC is one of the six main bodies established by the United Nations Charter.
It is made up of 54 member states, elected by the General Assembly for three-year terms, based on equitable geographical distribution.
This body coordinates the economic and social work of the United Nations, its specialized agencies, and its subsidiary bodies, including functional commissions that address different topics, and five regional commissions, such as the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which Peru currently chairs.
As a member of ECOSOC, Peru will promote the strengthening of multilateralism, along with international cooperation and solidarity, in order to address global challenges through effective public policies aimed at sustainable development.
