13:14 | Lima, Feb. 15.

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) on Tuesday reported that production in Peru increased 13.31% last year compared to 2020 —the year the COVID-19 pandemic had begun in the country.

INEI explained that only in December 2021 productive activities grew 1.72% compared to the same month of the previous year —a result explained by the positive evolution of most economic sectors.

During the last month of 2021, the increase in capacity limits at shopping centers and restaurants was ordered, as was the continuation of the resumption of arts and entertainment activities, with a certain amount of attendance, so as to guarantee social distancing.

Farming sector

INEI reported that the farming sector grew by 9.20% last December.

In 2021, this sector accumulated a rise of 3.81%.

Fishing sector

During December 2021, fishing sector production decreased 12.60% due to lower extraction of maritime origin species (-13.77%) associated with lower landings of anchovy for indirect human consumption (fishmeal and fish oil), having extracted 1,082,000 tons compared to 1,226,000 tons registered in the same month of 2020.

Nonetheless, this sector rose by 2.78% during the year 2021.

Mining and Hydrocarbons

In December 2021, mining and hydrocarbons sector production fell 6.07% due to the negative performance of the metallic mining subsector (-7.11%) because of lower volumes of iron (-23%), zinc (-19.2%), lead (-10.0 %), copper (-6.7%), and gold (-5.4%).
They were attenuated by higher production of molybdenum (+9.1%), tin (+5.8%), and silver (+1.2%).

As a whole, production by this sector grew 7.45% in 2021.

Manufacture

Last December, the manufacturing sector rose by 1.45% because of greater activity of the non-primary subsector (+9.50%), while the primary subsector registered a decrease (-14.76%).

This sector expanded 17.73% during 2021.

Electric power

The electricity, gas and water sector rose by 2.52% due to higher production of electricity (+2.43%), gas distribution (+4.74%), and water (+2.79%) subsectors.

In 2021, this sector experienced a growth of 8.55%.

Construction

On the other hand, the construction sector decreased 8.90% —as a result of less public investment in construction (-18.45%) and lower domestic cement consumption (-0.27%).

Nonetheless, this sector expanded 34.66% during 2021.

Trade

The trade sector rose 2.69% in December due to the favorable performance of the vehicle sales and repair division (+8.36%), wholesale (+2.53%), and retail sales (+1.84%). Thanks to this result, 10 consecutive months of positive rates were recorded throughout 2021.

As a whole, production by this sector increased 17.82% in 2021.

Transportation and Storage

The institute reported that the transportation, storage and messaging sector grew 10.62% due to the positive behavior of transportation (+10.39%), as well as storage and messaging (+11.18%) subsectors.

This sector increased 17.68% during 2021.

Accommodation and Restaurants

The accommodation and restaurants sector experienced a positive variation of 32.07% due to greater activity of the accommodation (+70.17%) and restaurants (+29.28%) subsectors.

Thus, production by this sector expanded 43.33% in 2021.

Telecommunications and Other Services

INEI announced that the telecommunications and other information services sector rose by 4.73%, supported by the positive result linked to the telecommunications subsector (+3.34%) and the positive behavior of other information services (+13.33%).

Concerning the telecommunications subsector, telephone service rose by 4.03%, followed by Internet and TV subscription services (+1.94%), as well as data transmission service (+2.53%).

During 2021, production by this sector grew 7.61%.

Financial and Insurance Sector

The financial and insurance sector contracted 8.33% in December.

The deceleration of credits occurred due to lower placements registered in the following sectors: real estate, business and rental activities; transportation, storage and communications; education; construction; hotels and restaurants.

This sector accumulated a growth of 5.94% in 2021.

Services Provided to Companies

In December 2021, the services provided to companies sector rose by 4.39% due to the dynamism of travel agencies and tour operators (+96%); advertising and market research (+13.6%); professional, scientific and technical activities (+3.1%); as well as activities linked to administrative services and support to companies (+2.1%).

This sector increased 14.37% during 2021.
