Peru destroyed over 42 tons of drugs in 2020

The Committee for the Destruction of Drugs Seized from Illicit Trafficking —attached to Peru's Interior Ministry (Mininter)— managed to destroy over 42 tons of drugs, which had been seized during various police operations held in the country during 2020.

The destroyed narcotics included 16,061 kg of cocaine paste; 13,314 kg of cocaine hydrochloride; 13,112 kg of marijuana; and 85 kg of other drugs leading to a total of 42,575 kg.

According to the Organized Crime Directorate (DGCO), 4,728 kg of drugs were incinerated in the first session (March), 18,691 kg in the second (July), and 19,154 kg in the third one.

This is the outcome of the efforts undertaken by police directorates and divisions, as well as tactical operations and antidrug agencies that also broke up 36 organizations linked to illicit trafficking of drugs in 2020.

Likewise, the Special Project for Control and Reduction of Illegal Crops in Alto Huallaga (CORAH) —supported by the National Police of Peru— eradicated a total of 6,272 ha of illegal coca crops over three months in Huanuco, San Martin, and Ucayali regions.

The operations were focused on seven coca areas, especially in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM).
