Peru: Defense Min meets with IACHR representatives

Defense Minister Alberto Otarola on Tuesday met with representatives of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), who are currently paying a visit to Peru.


At the meeting, the high-ranking official reiterated his full support for the Armed Forces in their actions during the state of emergency, in accordance with the Peruvian Constitution, the government agency reported via its official Twitter account.


During the meeting with the IACHR delegation, the Cabinet member pointed out that intervention by the Armed Forces is aimed at maintaining order and restoring it.

"The main mission of the Armed Forces and the National Police is to protect the health and integrity of citizenry; that is their constitutional mission," he asserted.


Moreover, Minister Otarola expressed his solidarity with the relatives of the citizens who had died during demonstrations in various regions.

He also affirmed that these cases will be investigated to punish those responsible.
