Peru: Cusco dazzles world with Inti Raymi ceremony

12:32 | Cusco (Cusco region), Jun. 24.

The anticipated theatrical representation of the Inti Raymi in Cusco dazzles the world. With great solemnity, the ceremony of the "Encounter of two Worlds" was held this morning at the Main Square of the Imperial City, led by Inca Pachacutec —played by David Ancca Cuyo— and Cusco Province Mayor Victor Boluarte.

The event began at around 9:30 a.m., when the Inca reached Cusco's Main Square joined by the Coya (Inca's main wife) —played by Norvina Gallegos— and the royal entourage.

Then, he went up to the ushno (ceremonial altar), from where he ordered Andean priests to read the coca leaves.

After this ritual, the Inca called Cusco Mayor Victor Boluarte, to whom he gave a quipu (a knot-record Andean system) and entrusted him to develop the city and keep his promises.

For his part, the provincial authority affirmed that he would work tirelessly to achieve that goal and thanked him for staging the Inti Raymi.

At the end of the ceremony, the Inca and his entourage left the place to go to Regocijo Square, where dozens of tourists and locals had gathered to applaud them.

Afterwards, the lead actors hopped on shuttles to go to the Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Park, where the main ceremony will be held.

It is worth noting that the "Salute to the Sun" ceremony took place before the "Encounter of two Worlds" at Coricancha Temple (now Santo Domingo Church). In this private act, the Inca sang to the Inti, or Sun God, which came out in a clear blue sky.
