Vehicles operating between Machu Picchu Pueblo (Town) and the llaqta must be entirely electric in order to help preserve the Inca citadel and its surrounding environment,
Culture Minister Alfredo Luna Briceño stated.
In an interview with Andina News Agency, the government representative said that, given its characteristics, this type of vehicle is well suited to preserving the Historic Sanctuary's integrity.
"An electric vehicle produces less vibration, which means it does not cause damage to the archaeological site. Besides, it does not consume flammable fuel," he noted.
The Cabinet member added that maintenance for these vehicles is cheaper than for those that run on other types of fuel, which would reduce the cost of transporting tourists at the site.

Municipal jurisdiction
Minister Luna recalled that transportation between Machu Picchu Pueblo and the llaqta falls under the authority of the Provincial Municipality of Urubamba.
In that regard, he noted that contractual disputes among companies in the sector, as well as new bidding processes, fall under the responsibility of that municipal authority.
In light of the complications that have recently arisen over this issue, the minister said the central government "has understood that the Municipality of Urubamba requires support."
To that end, meetings have been held with representatives of the municipality; the Ministries of Culture, Environment, and Transportation; as well as the regional government and the District Municipality of Machu Picchu.
Within this framework, the minister said he reiterated his call for the transport vehicles operating on the routes connecting the llaqta with Machu Picchu Pueblo to be electric.
"I have already raised this point with the Machu Picchu Management Unit during our permanent meetings, and it is the Culture sector's position as a recommendation for the upcoming concession bidding process for the route," he expressed.
The government official also noted that the issue of concessions in that area is complex and must be resolved jointly by several sectors.
He mentioned that the ministry under his charge is responsible for preserving Machu Picchu's Inca citadel and adjacent natural park, as well as ensuring the sanctuary's sustainability.
