Peru: Crowds of worshipers join final Lord of Miracles procession

10:28 | Lima, Nov. 1.

The fifth and last Señor de los Milagros (Lord of Miracles) procession of the year will take place Friday, November 1, through the streets of downtown Lima.

Dressed in purple robes, hordes of faith-driven devotees will join the final tour of the 'dark-skinned' Christ before returning to Las Nazarenas Church —the saint's home— where it is to remain until next year.

To do so, vehicle restrictions will be put in place between noon and 7:30 PM on Tacna Avenue and Emancipacion Avenue, as well as on Callao, Chancay, Conde de Superunda, and Huancavelica streets.

The Christ image will be escorted by the local Brotherhood as well as by female singers and 'sahumadoras' —women carrying smudging incense burners— making it a one-of-a-kind procession.

The icon is venerated by a multitude of people bound together by the common hope that the Lord will protect and give them strength in their daily lives.

This image is a replica of a centuries-old mural of the crucifixion painted by a slave in the 17th century.

It can be traced to the colonial era in which an Angolan slave drew the image of a black Jesus Christ on the walls of a hut in the plantation of Pachacamilla, near Lima.

The Lord of Miracles became a motive for worship after the wall on which it was painted miraculously survived a destructive earthquake unscathed.
