The administration of the third booster dose against coronavirus to the population aged 65 and over may begin in Peru between November 1 and 2, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported on Tuesday.

Minsa's Immunization Director Gabriela Jimenez explained that —to achieve this goal— the ministry is verifying that the names of those scheduled for this third dose appear on the Pongo el Hombro (I Lend a Shoulder) platform, so that they or their relatives can know the date and place for the administration of the vaccine.

The official pointed out that 1,920,820 people in this age group are registered to date. They are eligible to receive this booster dose.

In this regard, Jimenez indicated that one of the conditions to receive the third dose is that the person has received the second dose 180 days or 6 months ago.

"Under this principle, we must take into account this temporality. So, it is 180 days after the administration of the second dose," she emphasized.

The official reported that Minsa is currently working on putting the database in order, adding that the verification of second dose gaps is being completed this week.

Jimenez explained that the immunization of the population aged over 65 with the third dose will be carried out in each region, in accordance with the programming implemented by each jurisdiction.

"We understand that, within this group, we have people in nursing homes and places where we have to go in person to locate and vaccinate them," Jimenez said.

"As it is a population that is already known, and we have it located, our scope of action will be to locate them once and for all and vaccinate them," she pointed out.

Second doses

Moreover, Jimenez reported that —to date— more than 190,000 people over 60 years of age have been identified, who are awaiting the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

"They are people that we have to continue locating across the whole country. Therefore, we rely on lists of names. We are giving a chance this week so that we can complete the first and second doses to start with a third dose," she stressed.
