The COVID-19 vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 will take place at special sites, such as schools and hospitals, not at the same vaccination sites where adults are getting their shots, said Alexis Holguin, General Director of Strategic Interventions in Public Health at the Ministry of Health.

"We will set up special sites. We are working hand-in-hand with the Ministry of Health (Minsa) to administer the vaccine at strategic locations, such as schools and some hospitals," the expert said.

"In the case of children with HIV, there is already a special network (of establishments where they are treated) available for them," he added.

In this sense, Holguin noted that 5- to 11-years-olds with comorbidities will be the first to be inoculated with the COVID-19 vaccine.

"These children are at higher risk of developing severe diseases and include those with Down syndrome, orphan or rare diseases, those who have HIV or live with a person with HIV, children with cancer, those who have undergone organ transplants, as well as children with type 1 diabetes and obesity," he explained.

The Minsa official reiterated that children between 5 and 11 years old must be accompanied by a parent or a relative over 18 years of age to sign the consent form when they go to get their COVID-19 vaccine.
