Coronavirus-related deaths in Peru crossed 180,000 on May 22, according to a tally compiled by the working group formed by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) to establish new criteria to update the death toll during the pandemic.

From March 1, 2020, to May 22, 2021, 180,764 Peruvians have died due to complications related to the COVID-19 infection.

This report is based on information provided by Noti-Sinadef, Edgardo Nepo Linares —the spokesperson of said working group— commented at a press conference.

Speaking from the Government Palace in Lima, Health Minister Oscar Ugarte affirmed that this important update on the death toll is part of the State's responsibility to tackle the pandemic.

He said he is not surprised, adding that various international projections indicate that official figures do not come close to reflecting the real number of deaths, due to shortcomings in monitoring systems.

For her part, Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez highlighted the work carried out by this group of experts, whose efforts will be critical to provide financial support to several minors and families affected by the pandemic.
